Providing Legal Support For “Dreamers”

The DREAM Act — short for “Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors” — is a law in California and several other states designed to allow minors who were brought into the U.S. under the age of 16 without proper documentation to attend school, meet in-state tuition requirements for post-secondary education and obtain eligibility for academic financial aid.

While a similar law has been proposed several times at the national level, there is not currently a federal DREAM Act in place. In 2012, however, President Obama announced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, through which the Department of Homeland Security would not deport certain undocumented young people who entered the U.S. as children.

Practicing Immigration Law In Tumultuous Times

The children affected by the DREAM Act, often called “Dreamers,” entered the country illegally, but under DACA the government recognized that these children did not break the law intentionally. Since the election of President Trump, it's unclear how changes in the law could affect Dreamers, but the Trump administration has indicated that it plans to introduce changes to the country's immigration policies.

The attorneys at the Law Offices of Vivian N. Szawarc will help you stay up to date on the latest developments so you can successfully file for DACA, apply for the DREAM Act and generally navigate the legal system even as our laws are in flux.
